+final week 2005+

the final week of 2005, the final time i donned a camou no.4 this year before the start of the new year. the second week at the school of military medicine was pretty hectic, because basically life as a combat medic means you gotta learn both medical stuffs plus military stuffs. pretty xiong some might say, because it mentally puts you to the test.

anyway, i started the week on monday morning, doing boxing day guard duty. regimental duties never got worst. 24-hour shift resulted in lack of sleep, and spoiling the festive mood in the process. we had our test on various suction units on tuesday morning, tiring yet pretty interesting because my buddy, also our "legend", started some of his trademark foolish moves again.

we had our first IV session on wednesday. some braved through, some tried their best to perform at their very best. mine was rather smooth, hopefully it stays the same way for the rest of the other 9 sessions. thursday was a full day of lectures, another shot at being IC, i dunno why too, but i really hate shouting commands. finally comes friday, the whole day at the ADF field doing transporting of casualty. thank god its friday, because we were all pretty shacked out after one whole day at the field carrying the 80-kg mannequin and we were just so happy to know its book out day.

this week we also bade farewell to 3 fellow platoon mates who had to be OOC-ed because they couldnt converse in english, thus having the disability to do the tests, they had to be released, and i hope they do well for our motherland in their 2-year national service here. today's nye, just let your hair down and enjoy the final day of the year with a bang. happy new year one and all =]

+merry xmas!+

are you guys finished with the year's resolutions? getting all the things you planned 51 weeks ago done, happy with the year, and ready for the next? well, i certainly have not. and i know it'll never get done in one week's time. anyway, we can start planning for 2006, because the new year is only 7 days away!

caught up with my polytechnic mates on xmas eve. this time round, we have so much more company compared to the usual weekly ones we had. marina square changed so much ever since i went there months' ago. WOW. its so much more funky and feisty. i remember going there during my childhood days.. the times when its so quiet, when k-mart, metro still ruled the area, and the foodcourt, with the arcade at level 2. and now, i dont think any of the shops are still there, gone are the foodcourts, and here comes the new posh restaurants which prove to serve better service and earning more rent for the management.

eventually we had dinner at suntec city. dont ask me why we ate there and not marina. we just WALKED there. at a restaurant called olio. kinda normal i would say; the ambience, price, food and everything. crayfish for xmas this year! a change for a start. more walking, this time round suntec city. toy'r'us is open! didnt know that either. since enlisting, i haven been taking note of stuffs.

went over to town. police there like the previous years, but the crowd this year comprised so much of bangladeshees, and families. party foam were already sprayed around so early. but we managed to bash thru from orchard mrt station to lido for our midnight movie, the chronicles of narnia: the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. i remember vaguely watching the same movie, the same fantasy of going to wonderland through the wardrobe. it really brings back memories playing hide and seek with my bro, or running away from my dad's cane, hiding in the wardrobe.

we took a walk from orchard to plaza sing. had an early breakfast and enjoying rubbish on the streets after the wild party. singaporeans' always have to leave some stuffs after they leave. be it at the cinema, the beaches, or at foodcourts. our habits live on forever huh. cabbed home with the tpy gang.

+first bookout/xmas rants+

i miss sunny island pulau tekong. the little paradise most would think back on their happiest and elated days of national service. many would say that because its when you have 50 different personalities fused into one platoon, all having one purpose - to go through it once and for all. maybe im too used to life in there, singing and shouting taurus 3 too often. its in my blood. =]

anyway, first week at the school of military medicine was kinda boring. most of the privates there werent thinking they would be posted to SMM just like me. the morale was kinda low for the first three days, but we managed to pull through the arduous period of getting used to everything. and im glad the morale was peaking when i was the platoon IC on friday! who isnt happy on a bookout day? even though we had a three hour lecture before the first bookout, we were just so crazy over it.

this combat medic course i've embarked on is kinda short, initially 9 weeks, but eventually extended to 10 weeks due to the many festive holidays coming up to end feb. anyway, im not obliged to give too much details due to SAF's policy, but im sure some interesting jokes will not kill. these will be provided when the weeks go by. keep looking forward!

a friend and i were just discussing how xmas eve party should be. getting wild at a local club, dancing the nite away, or just having a pleasant dinner just happy to have each other's company? the meaning of christmas has evolved over the centuries, i guess it has somewhat changed one way or another. i remember my secondary school days sitting around the church with my catholic classmates singing xmas carols at the neighbourhood church. den came the poly days, playing with party sprays, getting yourself all wet and bubbly, having a good laugh, and finally taking the last train home.

i guess its all the same. spending one good night thinking about GOD's sacrifice. the sins we've done hopefully gets cleansed. maybe its another chance on this day for terrorists to strike once again. just stay safe and joy over this festive season. merry christmas bloggers!

+posting/xmas+

if you haven already known, im posted to combat medic. no OCS or sispec, kinda disappointed but at the same time relieved at the result of what had been the final verdict. like most of my platoon mates have been discussing over the weekend, the EI survey was a waste of time. most of us did not get into what we ought to have chosen, maybe the rumours were true; our vocation has been planned even before our enlistment.

like they say, let nature take its course. no point trying to change the impossible. im sure everything happens for a reason. the posting must have had its true reflection of one's ability towards maximising our strengths in serving the nation. the problem is, i found out some of the most crappy people were posted to the same vocation. lets see how interesting life gets over the next few weeks at the medical school.

by the way, xmas is just a week away from now. sadly to say, all the xmas pressies are mostly not bought. =/ this year im definitely gonna skip the festive turkey and roasted chicken, considering all the years eating them and im so sick of them; im just going to spend one quiet simple night chilling out this year. probably with a few friends, depending on what comes around, plans always get disrupted because of poor management. lol.

the past three night spent walking aimlessly around town looking for presents were bound to be futile. there were certainly many more lonesome souls around i could see, spending the festive season all by themselves. and this time round, there are so many giant xmas trees for you to put inside your already brightly-lit xmas fotos, which i find quite amusing, spending so much funds on trees when one or two is actually quite suffice.

all these rants is making me late for soccer. i'll see what i can add on once i get back. have a merry xmas people, in case i do not haf the chance to say it on that day.

+its all coming to an end+

the year is finally coming to an end.. looking back on how the year has been, i must say mine hasnt been a really great one. how has yours been? start thinking back on 2005, pin-point the mistakes you have made, try to learn from it, and suss out the achievements you have made over the year.

the first half of my year i was still a polytechnic student, wild, maned and living by my own rules and self-belief. the burdens of final year project had just ended and life was just so sweet. the luxury of going anywhere you want after school, wearing what you love to school, and making a nuisance out of yourselves.

the middle bit of 05 was probably getting boring while waiting to be enlisted. had to work to kill time, and earn some extra pocket money, probably what everyone else would be doing. getting a job was most troublesome, considering the working hours, environment and the pay drawn at the end of the month. i saved the trouble of those after finding the contact number of my ex-colleague, and working at my previous workplace.

the final few months of 2005, i would say, the turning point of every teenage turning to mature youths. national service, a journey every single male singaporeans has to embark on. basic military training would be the very first thing recruits go through whilst their two year service starts. the most time you have to bond with your bunk mates and everyone else in the company. it is also the best time you will have in the army. now that it's ended, i have a sense of mixed feelings in me; happy that it has finally come to an end, and sad to leave a bunch of new mates i have made. at the same time, im also excited to know where i would be posted to for the rest of my army career. by the way, the posting comes out in less den 12 hours time =/

+updates+

its been awhile since i logged onto blogger for some serious updates.. i've been busy lately, kinda happy i've got some stuffs to do instead of rotting around the apartment, just like now =/

anyhow, lets start from last thurs..
went to the pay respects to late-grandma, her 100th day since her departure. thinking back, i realised time really flies. when she left, i was about to enlist, and now, 13 weeks has gone by. and as i stepped into that place again, i realised i do not miss my grandma as much as i did 3 months ago.. which i guess is a good thing, cause the memories that stick on will only give you more pain..

the next three days (091205-111205) was the kuala lumpur trip with my family
it wasnt too bad lah, the bus ride was smooth, not much traffic on a friday morning, after 7 hours, we finally arrived at our place of reside for the next two nights, Palace of the Golden Horses.

it was stated there, 6-star hotel. where is the extra star? i dont find anything which deserved one more rating. i must say that the ambience and architectural design were one of its kind, something you might not find in malaysia. the first night, we toured the MINES shopping fair, and MINES wonderland. by the way, MINES is the management which has a string of hotels, and is responsible for this resort city. this resort city has its own golf course, hotels, lake, theme park, shopping centre etc. we had our steamboat dinner at a traditional malay house in the theme park, accompanied by a performance by dancers from sarawak. the night was rounded off with some spectacular display in the form of musical fountain.

the second day, we took a shuttle bus from our hotel to Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC). backed by the world's tallest twin towers, the petronas twin towers, we took some fotos just like everyone did, and this was one of the frustrated face because its so hard to get a nice picture of both towers looking majestic..

KLCC was more of a m'sia's answer to takashimaya. mostly imported goods, thus the prices were much more expensive than the usual local products. those stuffs out to exploit tourists' money. we took a short train ride to petaling street, aka chee chong kai. everything fake, everything cheap, a paradise for cheapos to grab whatever they cant afford yet want to feel "rich". i got myself some clothes and shoes =]

the sign says, jalan petaling, but due to my camera, its mirrored.

we hopped onto another train to Berjaya Times Square. yet another shopping paradise for christmas sweeping. a ten-storey shopping mall, a part of it is joined by a hotel, and the 4 upper storeys consists of a indoor theme park. roller coaster rides, space odyssey, you name it, you'll find it there. my brother and i took a shot at some of the rides while the rest of the family continued their shopping. the whole space was so big i guess you wont finish in one whole day. the shops caters to both young and old, male and female. and there's a supermarket right at the low ground level for families who need to grab some groceries for their home. fortunately, most of the shops werent open for service at our time there, so we had more time to look around in the limited amount of time. this also gives us more reasons to check out that place on our next trip to kuala lumpur. we didnt have much trouble finding a cab back to our hotel because cabbies were sitting outside the shopping mall waiting for us. lol. we could choose which one we favoured and had fun slashing prices because most of these cab drivers didnt believe in taxi meters.

the final day at m'sia was the best time for us to grab our final stuffs, and time for more pictures at the hotel.

we had some misunderstanding with the hotel staff, causing some disputes, and i think im never gonna visit this hotel ever. the standards of hotel staff, breaching trust entrusted by its customers. these things inevitably happens all the time. and the bus which was due at 1500 came at 1545. we were more pissed than before. the fact that we were returning to motherland on a sunday evening meant we were in the middle of the peak traffic at the second link. by the time we got back home, it was already monday morning. =/ i hate travelling on buses.

monday was the section gathering, but only 5 went. how pathetic. thats the start of falling apart after three months together. had a decent meal at nydc before shopping. we met up with some of our platoon mates in the evening for a game of soccer match.

half of the block leave has gone by so quickly. xmas is less den a fortnight away. i guess thats something to look forward to somehow

+start of block leave+

the commencement of a 12-day block leave for the newly-promoted privates. the day has been boring. back to the usual days where i have nothing scheduled for the day, just sitting around the house rotting the best years of my life away. being an NSF means i cant work, i just have to spend, spend, spend.

plans heading to zouk seems bleak now.. thou i know how badly i wan to dance the sorrows away. something always has to crop up at the last minute, and there's nothing we can do to remedy it. ah, fuck. next week, one more chance.

im still in the midst of planning what else i could do during my break, before more challenges i face in the rest of my nsf life. sofar i still have one more week to spare, considering the KL trip and soccer match coming up on friday and monday respectively. anyone's got any brillant ideas?

+POP lo!+

we waited for three months for this day, and it has finally arrived. seems like its only yesterday that we step foot on sunny island pulau tekong for our physical training phase with our civilian clothes, long hair and barbaric nature. now, most of us have turned into thinking soldiers, more mature and better trained and equipped with military knowledge.

the previous weeks' rehearsals and training prior to this very day all comes into play today. our marching werent as bad, our coordination was so much better. im sure we did our parents, and most importantly, ourselves, proud. all the hard work did not go down to waste after all. given the harsh weather we face during 4 formal rehearsals, it seemed to be rather ample.

everyone was in high spirits at the empty line resting, talking, and watching the drill team performing their winning moves to the audience. after which, it was our turn to march out. the crowd was rather overwhelming. shawn, my old friend from poly, and i were busy searching for our families whilst we were standing still there, still managing to crack a few lame jokes to ease the tension for everyone who were enduring the sweat and lack of sleep from the partying the previous night.

soon after, we saluted to SAF BMTC commander and reviewing officier(RO) upon their arrival. the RO gave a parade inspection before giving his speech. that was the killer because everyone wasnt supposed to move. that was also when all the jokes started. we were marching past the podium even before we knew it. the short parade was memorable yet meaningful. we came back with clean fatigue, singing the "training to be soldiers" song. our friends and family got onto the parade to put on our jockey caps for us and taking some quick photos. our final act was the infantry roar where we wow-ed the crowd. flashes everywhere from the grandstand. we tossed our caps into the air at the end of the roar. and that marks the end of our BMT phase!

more photos taken after we finally met up with our platoon mates and family. shall upload them when i get them ready.. had dinner at changi village before heading home for some rest before enjoying my block leave ahead..

+final bookout+

the weeks has gone by pretty quickly.. the final weekend before i finally leave my footprints on sunny island, Pulau Tekong. a serene and reclusive island situated on the north-east of singapore, its a playground for soldiers. i know im gonna miss that place, memories both pleasant and gloomy ones, will hold onto me for quite a few years to come.

we appealed for our ex platoon commander and platoon sergeant to come back to grace our graduation parade, because it is the both of them who made us into who we are today, instilling most of the disipline in us. its a pity they are to ORD so quickly, but i know they are very happy for us, and the whole company has seen how influencial they can get during the various events earlier on.

this weekend is the 12th weekend i've spent as a miserable yet meaningful botak recruit. the final one before we finally pass out from basic military training phase of our two-year national service stint. anyway, the week was pretty normal. most of the dudes were busy with their own committments, both regimental and social duties. im surprised to get a call from ian, an old friend i made in IRC, but rekindled our friendship again when i saw him in camp. back to the old days, watching them play bowling, hitting town for some pool practice (well for me, cuz he's the best player in the channel), and going on to check out his friends over at indochine. had a little chit-chat before heading to chinablack. its the first time i've been there, everytime i wanted to go there, but something always crops up in the end. pretty sian for both of us, because his friends were busy dancing, while we were not really in the dancing mood, whilst drinking and just stoning there. we were pretty much shagged out from the previous night's route march. we left kinda early, before setting off to dreamland..

+12 weeks gone.+

its all coming to an end now.. thinking back makes me wonder how i could go through so much i never thought i would accomplish. maybe thats how national service serves, to push yourself to the limit, and excel in your own way.

we just completed our IPPT on monday, i missed silver by three seconds, adding one minute to my previous diagnostic test. fuck. cramps and stitches come all at one go. excuses some might say, but its good to see many improving quite abit over the course of 13 weeks. most of us were zero fighters from the beginning, turning into stronger and better man. and now im proud to say we have gotten ourselves ready for more challenges in life.

bmtc school 2 also organised games day and recruits' evening for us on thursday, the privates-to-be. some of the games which would bring the recruits together as a school level. pitting ourselves with the rest of the other companies in school 2. in the end, we missed the top three spots by a minor margin. anyway, our coy were the only coy without any mascots or banners. taurus company was quite abit of mess, rather slack even the sergeants say. but we still managed to win the tug-of-war and first runner-spot for our chain-of-command. tug-of-war was made up of friends from our platoon, and we managed to nick the prize having beaten two direct batches from ninja and raven; the two strongest teams we would ever imagine facing in this event.

recruits' evening was more like a recruits performing for recruits kind-of thingie. plus music and dance company giving the final few performances which really psyched us up on the hectic past 12 weeks. most of the performers were rapper-nigga stuffs, which didnt get much support from the crowd. superstar finalists derrick and wei cong also had a go at one chinese song, didnt know what the title is, but they seemed to be tired after training. who isnt tired anyway?

another school level event, this time, the significant 24km graduation route march. walking around pulau tekong with 7 other companies. singing, schouting and screaming on the top of our lungs, all kinds of songs, army songs, chinese pop, retro, xmas jingles all mixed into one. spirits high, morale shooting up into the heavens. the final few cliks where we continued 5km without any rest because we were slightly behind schedule was kinda xiong. shagged faces. tired bodies. im glad we managed to pull through in the end, not even a single soul fell out during the gruelling march.

as we approach the final 2 days to POP on tuesday, im happy to say i've have made 49 other new friends. be it good or bad, friendly or hostile, i know i have enjoyed myself and gotten myself ready for more challenges that is installed for me in my path ahead.
